Event Details
We are living in turbulent, chaotic, and complex times. Right now, every hour seems to bring a new challenge, and change feels more and more radical. Resources are short, and expectations are high. People who are under great stress can become defensive and erratic, or passive and helpless. Novel problems demand creative solutions, at the same time that our organizations and teams are stretching to the breaking point.
Whether or not you are a frontline supervisor or an executive director, you are likely feeling the pressures of this context. This is like no other time, and it requires adaptive leadership.
Lisa Negstad has trained hundreds of supervisors to respond to normal challenges of day-to-day change. Now, she is partnering with Glenda Eoyang of Human Systems Dynamics Institute, to help you cope with this VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) environment.
During this training, which is offered as a series of six monthly 90-minute sessions, Lisa and Glenda will provide you with frameworks and tools to improve your ability to supervise others in a constantly changing, uncertain context.
Through these six sessions, you will:
- Relieve stress for yourself and your staff when you feel more competent to manage in this context,
- Analyze what types of problems you’re facing and adapt your leadership accordingly,
- Prepare for a future you can’t predict or control,
- Build your own story about change and how your team will survive (and even thrive) through it, and
- Practice tools and models and join a community of people who share your challenges and opportunities.
Course Schedule + Topics
The registration fee includes all six sessions. When you register, reserve all six dates on your calendar from 2pm-3:30pm Eastern each day: May 3, May 16, June 6, June 13, July 18, and July 25.
Session One: Making decisions in chaos
The world is changing, and you and your organization and team must change, too. Learn a new way of thinking about this turbulent context and to see beyond the immediate chaos to find simple and useful leadership actions.
Session Two: Balancing order and chaos
Understanding how change happens can provide insight on how to lead in chaotic change. This session offers a framework for understanding change. Also, in times of uncertainty, answers also have a very short shelf-life. You have to rely on questions (rather than answers) to balance order and chaos. Your power as a leader will be measured by the quality of the questions you ask. Dive into the inquiry and discover untapped resources for leading others.
Session Three: Finding your agility: continuous learning in a time of rapid change
In chaos and uncertainty, there are often multiple truths at play. Learn how to decide, adapt and take action when you are not in control, multiple truths are emerging, and the rules change everyday.
Session Four: Responding in “real time:” knowing what to do when and when to wait
How do you set priorities when everything seems urgent? How do you make sense of things when it seems like everything is coming to you at once? You will learn to identify patterns, dive deep when needed, and step back to get a bigger perspective.
Session Five: Leveraging the energy in conflict
In times of change, challenge and surprise bring opportunity. It also brings conflict and frustration. We think of conflict as a kind of tension, and tension as a source for energy. See what it means to surface and use the energy in conflict, rather than ignoring it or finding some false peace.
Session Six: Open format – bring your own dilemmas to workshop together
Throughout the program, you will learn new concepts, skills, language, and practices to help you thrive as a leader in a complex environment. In this session, you will apply your learnings to your real life challenges and those of your colleagues. Bring your most complicated dilemmas and leave with practical steps to shift your team and organization toward greater health and productivity.

To be effective, nonprofits must recruit board members who support their ideals, represent the diversity of the community, and bring a wide range of skills.
Does your board measure up? If not, why not? Where do they need improvement? How can you support them — as staff or a fellow board member — in doing a better job?
In this fast-paced webinar, we’ll show you:
- How to recruit more productive board members (and ease out the less effective ones)
- Five proven ways to increase their skills in fundraising and financial oversight
- The secrets to more efficient, substantive, fun board meetings
- The best ways to handle challenging personalities and encourage a wide range of opinions
- How to keep your board at the right “altitude” doing board-level work
We’ll take your questions throughout the webinar. And we’ll stick around at the end to answer any additional questions. Ask us anything!
Registration for the session is $35 CAD (~28 USD) and will be held on Zoom. All registrants will be provided with a link to the recordings and the presentation slides following the webinar.

Join the Missouri Headwaters Partnership this Thursday, 6-8pm to hear from the Montana Water Court, DNRC, FWP and others on water law basics in Montana. Montana state follows “prior appropriation”, which means that whoever first put water to “beneficial use” has first priority to that water. First in time, first in right. The Montana Constitution states that all water in Montana is owned by the state. The citizens of the state cannot own the water, but have the right to use it.
All use of water in Montana is based on those concepts, and knowing the basic ins & outs of our water law is necessary to understanding how water use works in our communities. We plan to keep this fairly high-level and basic so the general public can learn something and maybe even enjoy the conversation! We hope you’ll attend. Info below.
- The Missouri Headwaters Partnership will be hosting a virtual water rights panel on the evening of May 12th. Join us via Zoom at 6:00 PM for an opportunity to learn about Montana water rights from experts Maddy Weisz, Montana Water Court; Kerri Strassheim, DNRC; Andy Brummond, FWP; and more.

Future West and the Montana Watershed Coordination Council invite local conservation leaders to attend an in-person capacity-building workshop on Thursday, May 19, 2022, in Virginia City. We will focus on increasing the sustainability and impact of our work, including building stronger relationships to achieve local conservation goals. Included in the workshop will be an optional gathering the evening of May 18 to get to know one another and get our collective, creative juices flowing.
Watershed groups, conservation districts, Tribal government agencies, and municipal governments are invited to attend. The workshop will take place in an outdoor venue, and we will follow Covid-19 protocols as recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control at that time. More information to come!
This event will address needs identified during our co-hosted November 11, 2021 capacity-building peer-to-peer exchange: “Building Organizational and Community Resiliency in the New West.” This free event offered watershed groups, conservation districts, and other local conservation leaders the space to discuss ongoing changes in our communities and to share resources for adapting and responding – while staying true to our organizational missions and visions.
More information is available on the MWCC Training Page.

Passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Forest Service’s 10-year Wildfire Strategy signal a new era of historic investments in ecosystem restoration and wildfire risk reduction in the western U.S. But as initial projects and implementation plans are announced, the opportunities for community-based prescribed fire practitioners and advocates to engage in and inform the strategic expansion of prescribed fire continues to be unclear.
In this session, we will:
- Unpack the complex terrain of federal policymaking entities and venues that will influence federal wildfire and fuels reduction strategies.
- Review RVCC’s and partners’ collective prescribed fire and cooperative burning advocacy interests and recommendations.
- Identify opportunities for engagement, coalition-building, and advocacy using existing or new venues and strategies.

Event Details
The field practicum portion of our Basic Wetland Delineation course is open to those who have had a full, basic wetland delineation course (at least 32 instructional hours) in the past and want a refresher on field practices. This course alone does not satisfy the requirements for basic delineation training as specified by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. If you are looking to satisfy those requirements, you need to check out WTI’s other courses: Basic Wetland Delineation or Wetland Delineation with Emphasis on Soils and Hydrology Online with Field Practicum.
There are no lectures with the Wetland Delineation Refresher – only two days (16 hours) of intensive field work. You will receive a printed copy of lecture notes to review. You also have access to the course discussion board so you may ask questions of your instructor before and after your course as well as interact with other course participants.
The pre-requisite for this course is completion of a basic wetland delineation (at least 32 contact hours) course in the past from Wetland Training Institute, Inc. or any other provider. When registering, please identify the date, location and provider of the course in the comments/notes box.
You will receive via mail materials you should review prior to your refresher course dates. These include: printed Lecture Notes, a Pocket Guide to Hydric Soil Field Indicators, and a USB drive containing current 1987 Wetland Delineation Manual, Regional Supplements, Plant Lists, and other publications.
Tuition Cost: $600
The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Montana Wetland Council has funding to sponsor up to five individuals to attend this course. Those interested in applying for this opportunity must complete the online scholarship application.

Join this webinar to learn more about the Resist-Accept-Direct (RAD) framework, a decision-making tool that helps resource managers make informed strategies for responding to ecological changes resulting from climate change!
The RAD Framework lays out three approaches for making management decisions for systems undergoing ecosystem transformation: 1) Resist, where managers work to maintain or restore ecosystem composition, structure, processes, or function on the basis of historical or acceptable current conditions, 2) Accept, where managers allow ecosystem composition, structure, process, or function to change autonomously, and 3) Direct, where managers actively shape change in ecosystem composition, structure, processes, or function toward preferred new conditions.
