Join the Missouri Headwaters Partnership this Thursday, 6-8pm to hear from the Montana Water Court, DNRC, FWP and others on water law basics in Montana. Montana state follows “prior appropriation”, which means that whoever first put water to “beneficial use” has first priority to that water. First in time, first in right. The Montana Constitution states that all water in Montana is owned by the state. The citizens of the state cannot own the water, but have the right to use it.
All use of water in Montana is based on those concepts, and knowing the basic ins & outs of our water law is necessary to understanding how water use works in our communities. We plan to keep this fairly high-level and basic so the general public can learn something and maybe even enjoy the conversation! We hope you’ll attend. Info below.
- The Missouri Headwaters Partnership will be hosting a virtual water rights panel on the evening of May 12th. Join us via Zoom at 6:00 PM for an opportunity to learn about Montana water rights from experts Maddy Weisz, Montana Water Court; Kerri Strassheim, DNRC; Andy Brummond, FWP; and more.
